BOOK REVIEW: THE ROAD TO MUMBAI

road to mumbaiTitle: The Road to Mumbai

By: Ruth Jeyaveeran

Good For: Kids ages 4-8

The Skinny: A young girl named Shoba, with the help of her monkey Fuzzy Patel, takes a magical journey to Mumbai in order to attend a monkey wedding, meeting an eclectic assortment of well-wishers along the way.

The Pros: Gorgeous illustrations, an engaging plot, Fuzzy’s adorable snobbery

The Cons: May seem a bit long if your kids are very young, but otherwise a very nice read.

The Bottom Line: This is a sweet story about what can happen when you have faith in the kindness of strangers. Be warned, if your kids are anything like mine, they will want you to read The Road to Mumbai again and again!

Title: Maggie’s Chopsticks

Written by: Alan Woo

Illustrated by: Isabelle Malenfant

Good For: Kids ages 4-8

The Skinny: Young Maggie, desperate to master the mysterious art of eating with chopsticks, is by turns scolded and taunted by various family members around the dinner table, until her father inspires her to find her own way to success.

The Pros: Really beautiful illustrations, and the prose is almost poetry. Will be relatable to kids with older siblings.

The Cons: The story may seem a bit longer for younger kids, but worth the wait to see if and how Maggie masters her chopsticks.

The Bottom Line: This story reinforces the concept of trying and trying again until you succeed, no matter how long it takes or who is watching!
