General Vallejo’s Home, less than a mile away on foot from Sonoma Plaza, is the site of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo house he shared with his wife and children.

Vallejo was known for leading local troops to defend the town from the indigenous population. He also worked to free California from the Mexican government.
When he finally retired, it was to his estate here in Sonoma, where he died in 1890.

His home, grand compared to the standards of his peers, is maintained to this day, and each room is meticulously decorated, according the style of the times.
At the back of the house, there is a long bridge which overlooks a large, tranquil pond.

Visiting the home of General Vallejo gives great context to a visit to Sonoma, and provides a wonderful learning experience for the whole family!
Tips: Reaching General Vallejo’s Home is less than a mile on foot from Sonoma Plaza, which is a relaxing way to get some exercise. We visited on a weekday, and had the whole house to ourselves. Tours are self-guided.
