Kids can be just as affected by stress as adults as they try to cope with schoolwork, extracurricular activities, family responsibilities, and social pressures. Therefore, it’s important to teach your kids methods of self-care and to model those habits for them. The following tips can help with this challenging task.



Let your kids know that taking time to refresh and reset is a good thing, even a necessary thing, and teach them that they don’t have to feel guilty about stepping outside of the normal routine for a while.

If you notice that your child is exhibiting signs of stress, suggest they take some downtime. You can introduce practices of prayer, meditation, or guided breathing that can help your child regain calm, or you can engage your child in an exercise session to help combat stress and increase energy. 

According to Zenbusiness, depending on your child’s interests, you could also encourage them to spend time listening to music, reading a book just for fun, creating art, or working on craft projects. Then make sure that your child has enough time to really enjoy whichever self-care activity is chosen.

Don’t push your child into the next activity on the schedule. It’s more important for them to relax and recharge for a while. 


Children learn by imitation, so the best way to teach them about self-care is to model your own habits of self-care. Let your child see you taking time to care for yourself, exercising or meditating, reading, working on a craft project of your own, listening to music, or simply sitting quietly. Invite your child to join you (if that won’t get in the way of your own self-care), or at least let your child know why it’s important for you to have some downtime. 

Actually, caring for yourself can reduce stress for your entire family, including the kids, because you’ll be better able to handle challenges as they arise. Further, you can reduce family stress by setting up a schedule and some ground rules and making sure everyone understands how they work. This is especially important if you’re working from home and need to balance your work and family commitments. 


Another aspect of self-care for your children is family care for your entire family. Daily life often leads to tensions within families, and these tensions can build up over time and cause significant stress for family members. That’s why it’s so important to care for your family as a whole. Set aside time for family members to come together for some fun. Plan an outing to the zoo, a theme park, or a sporting event. Gather in the evening to eat pizza and watch a movie. Enjoy an afternoon of board games. Have fun together and take care of yourselves as a family. 


Boosting self-care for your children and yourself can improve the quality of everyone’s life, so make a commitment to self-care for the whole family.
