Title: The Girls
Written and Illustrated by: Lauren Ace and Jenny Løvlie
Good For: Kids ages 8-10
The Skinny: The main characters, best friends Sasha, Lottie, Alice, and Leela, bond as young girls in their secret meeting place, under an apple tree. Over the years, they support one another through the ups and downs of life: college, relationships, careers, and family. Though they sometimes find themselves apart, they always manage to come back together to be there for each other.
The Pros: The drawings are whimsical and will definitely keep any child’s attention. Issues about relationships–one of the girls is subtly shown to identify as LGBTQ–are also explored, but only in a way that older children might understand.
The Cons: Maybe you’ll cry…?
The Bottom Line: A beautifully written and illustrated children’s story about the power of female friendship and celebrating each other’s milestones and diversity, with lessons that will apply throughout life.
